M2Web

M2Web is a CGI Based Interface to a collection of MUMPS Routines (MRoutines) which is effective at providing a Browser - HTML - Web Interface to MUMPS Databases including FileMan and VistA.

It was developed and used by Jim Self at UCDavis in the Veterinary ospital whare an extensively modified version of VistA runs as the hospital EHR.

Here we are interested in using and extending (and DOcumenting) how to Install, Configure, COntrol and Use M2Web in development of new applications.

This page is being initiated by [[KW]] to collect the wisdom from the Technical Meeting in Sacramento, CA Sep 27-31, 2009.

KW:

MUMPS is a general purpose ANSI and ISO standard computer language which is a key component of VistA systems. As with VistA, there is considerable history.

MUMPS is the middle component of the whole VistA structural stack.

The structural components of most VistA implementations includes in its stack-
1. computer hardware running as a server - from PC's to much larger CPUs
the VA runs many DEC(now HP) VAX
A PC may run Linux - GTM Stacks
2. An Operation system- Linux or Windows or DEC/HP VMS
3. MUMPS/M System - Cache' or GT.M are the usual
4. Kernel (FileMan Sub component) - standardizes communications betwen OS and FileMan and MUMPS VistA Apps
4. FileMan is Software written in MUMPS which adds a higher level DataBase Manager than the inherent database function of MUMPS (known in MUMPS as Globals)
It has features analogous to SQL with many maintenance features, data dictionaries fof Files(~Tables) and fields defined within Files. It supports powerful cross referencing of Files, complex relationships between Files.
It adds support for defined data types, control of data entry and encoding and decoding formats for output.
5. VistA Applications, written in MUMPS with heavy dependence upon FileMan for the structure and design framework and includes many modules.
5a. The core modules handle structures/Files for patient identification(ADT or Registration) and visits and Files for various actors- physicians, nurses, clerks, administrators, etc.
5b. Modules stacked upon the Core manage many specific medical functions- eg. medications, notes, insurance claims, radiology.

The Client Server structure of VistA is implemented with a combination of technoligies. CPRS is the main GUI interface running on a client PC and Windows OS. It communicates over a standard LAN or Internet TCP/IP connection to the VistA Server. The Server end is managed by a VistA Module called the RPC Broker which connects the clients to the FIleMan VistA data. CPRS as it runs on the client is a special application written in Delphi.

Other components of VistA are evolving to use standard Browsers instead of CPRS to provide the User GUI interface via the Browser.

The oldest components of VistA and FileMan use a roll and scroll interface with a client terminal emulator connecting to the server securely over TCP/IP.

=== Implementations and Vendors ===

It is important for new people to know the difference between the language and the implementation of the language. Vendors sell implementations of MUMPS. In the process, they are allowed to add commands, functions, and special variables to their implementation of the language. This does not increase what is in the language, but simply in their product.

Currently there are several active Vendors of MUMPS, and MUMPS-like languages.

A partial list includes:

{| cellpadding="2" border="1"

* [[Common MUMPS Errors and What they Mean]]

* [[Ed de Moel]] has a good description of MUMPS language elements in his [http://www.jacquardsystems.com/Examples/index.htm MUMPS By Example] page.

If we think we need more details, we should add them here.

KW: /* Control of Users - malicious and uninformed contributions */

This is a discussion and overview of issues of managing the OpenVistA Wiki.

=Control of Users - malicious and uninformed contributions=
Wiki is traditionally wide open and philosophically adament in some quarters about this openess.

One argument is that there should be no inhibition to contribution in order to maximize input.

Truth is judged by the community and authority of experts - by their persistence ? This does work amazingly well(IMHO)in venues such as the WikiPedia on an amazing variety of detailed subjects. I was amazed at the level of information in taking a course on genomics and bioinformatics to find very useful things, well organized, in the Wikipedia articles. These supplemented what was covered in my course, by making it easy to look up - and I added my two cents in the process of taking the course.

Malicious stuff is easy to reverse and usually obvious to spot by legitimate readers and writers.

But, this takes time and misinformation/malicous information could be used in the interim. I would propose ultimately some changes in the Wiki software and policy to better control quality in some critical Wiki venues. I believe a level of sophistication can be achieved, however, with little inhibition to contribution, - maybe less. It involves policy an software enhancements to add editors to articles and authorship - responsibility (with limits) more analogous to standard textbooks or journal articles, but with the full power of contributions by many.

One relevant issue which hasn't been addressed is the idea of building a community.
This wiki for a while was invitation only. however no one seemed to be using the wiki.
then it became available for registered to use the system. however no one seemed to be using the wiki.
then it became freely editable however no one still seems to be using the wiki.
I'm not sure what the next action should be.

More discussion is (will be) under [http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Emergency_Medicine OCTEM], the emergency medicine WikiBook, if you are interested. [http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Emergency_Medicine/Guide_to_the_OCTEM Discussion is Here.]

=Article Naming=
Articles are created in a somewhat backhanded method of creating a link with double square brackets to an article that does not yet exist, then clicking on the link and getting an edit this page screen for the new article.

Selecting the Article name, is done by what you put in the brackets. The article name can be edited later, but not without some hassle- moving the discussion, correcting links here and there, ... things the Wiki software helps with, but is not perfect.

A convention would be useful to keep some coherence to the system. This Article's name is an example of how context suggests one phrase which is probably not the best Article Name.

Short names have the advantage of efficient use in Go vs Search box which is always available to find the articles. This would be useful when users watch an article and go there frequently.

Again, the issue of central control and coherency, vs not inhibiting or slowing down anyone with content to contribute, raises its (ugly?) head.

An interesting idea is that the article title is only one one way to find the article.
Other pages with other titles provide alternate indexes to the same information.
The use of the <nowiki>#REDIRECT [[Old Article Name]]</nowiki>
command allows the new titles to redirect the reader to the original title.
This only works with a single level of Redirection, ie: redirecting to a redirect page won't work.
But one could argue this forces people to know what they are are doing.

=System Specific Articles=

Issues such as mode-dependent information, like which MUMPS system is being used may be managed coherently. Thus a GTM use vs a Cache user could select efficiently articles tailored to thier MUMPS system when this is important.

A hospital installation versus a clinic or community clinic or emergency department (ED)installation, may select different articles. Perhaps markers within pages might make these distinctions and be useful then in searches.

=Categories=
Creating categories and managing them effectively for efficient use is an acquired art in Wiki.

KW: Strategic Plan for Alternate Table of Contents

=Strategic Plan for Augmenting VDL VistA Documentation for New Developers ([[User:KW|me]])=
This is my plan for supplementing the massive VDL documentation for VistA.

I need, and I assume others will also need, a means of finding my way around the elements of VistA.

I have some difficulty wading through 150 page pdf documents and scrolling and I love short hyperlinked pages of good information, even things that I just gleaned from reading through one of the long pdf documents, so I can remember it two weeks from now.

[[User:KW|I]] love the WIki concept and am working to become efficient and effective at using it.

Plans
**Revise the master page of VDL Documents - KW-TOC - my version of the Table of Contents
**Try to keep it complete - entries for each entry in the master page
**Rearrange the Order to be more logical - in my judgement
**Maintain links to the original documents on VDL
**Create Summary Pages - One or two page-length, summarizing what is in the VDL documents
**Add short descriptions of the documents, for someone not familiar with VistA's terminology
**Create Glossary-type pages which define VistA usage of terms and include (searchable) alternative terms in general usage. For example linking words like encounter, visit, clinic-visit, telephone call - to PCE in VistA (or whatever is appropriate).
*Methods
**Article Naming Convention - for now, I will try to keep this subproject separate by naming the articles KW-*
**Section Overview Articles will be KW-PCE-OVR where PCE is the VDL identifier. The Article Name will be Descriptive, probably the names in the VDL Master Page for now.
*Future Plans
**Ultimately Documentation needs to be segregated for clinicians, and various flavors of clinicians, versus technical documentation at various levels of detail.
**A loose level of Determining this would be nicer than Rigid overall structure enforcement - and and some Planning and Enforcement is probably necessary.
**Cross Linked hypertext (Wiki) pages allow a great deal of flexibility while allowing collaborative development of the documentation.

== Documentation created by WorldVistA and volunteers in the VistA Community. ==
[[KW-TOC|Alternative Overview of VDL Documents - Kirt Walker]] and here is my [[KW-Plan|Plan]] for doing this.

I am going to recreate this overview page - Table of Contents, so to speak, but add brief descriptions within the TOC and gradually add more detailed pages to describe the documents. There is a lot of documentation represented - several hundred documents of lengths in the hundreds of pages in the VDL. I will sort the order to be more logical, in my eyes and cross reference the identifiers for packages , like ADT - Admission, Discharge and Transfer, and PCE- Patient Care Encounter.

I am trying to learn VistA in detail and coming to it with no prior experience with VistA and no FileManager in 10 or 15 years, but hard core MUMPS background and 35 years of thinking about and working with Medical Informatics/Health Informatics and EHR concepts.
Wiki Management Discussion Article

KW: Mete discussion of the WIki Process and Management

This is a discussion and overview of issues of managing the OpenVistA Wiki.

=Control of Users - malicious and uninformed contributions=
Wiki is traditionally wide open and philosophically adament in some quarters about this openess.

One argument is that there should be no inhibition to contribution in order to maximize input.

Truth is judged by the community and authority of experts - by their persistence ? This does work amazingly well(IMHO)in venues such as the WikiPedia on an amazing variety of detailed subjects. I was amazed at the level of information in taking a course on genomics and bioinformatics to find very useful things, well orgnanized, in the Wikipedia articles. These supplemented what was covered in my course, by making it easy to look up - and I added my two cents in the process of taking the course.

Malicious stuff is easy to reverse and usually obvious to spot by legitimate readers and writers.

But, this takes time and misinformation/malicous inmformation could be used in the interim. I would propose ultimately some changesin the Wiki software and policy to better control quality in some critical Wiki venues. I believe a level of sophistication can be achieved, however, with little inhibition to contribution, - maybe less. It involves policy an software enhancements to add editors to articles and authorship - responsibility (with limits) more analogous to standard textbooks or journal articles, but with the full power of contributions by many.

More discussion is (will be) under OCTEM, the emergency medicine WikiBook, if you are interested.

I plan to contribute to this from the viewpoint of someone figuring out VistA and writing it down as I figure it out - a fresh pint of view.
